Your electric bike's brakes are one of its most important safety features, so keeping them in good condition is essential. Over time, brake pads naturally wear down through regular use, reducing braking performance and increasing stopping distances.

The good news is that replacing brake pads is a straightforward maintenance task that most riders can do at home with a few basic tools.

In this guide, we'll explain when your brake pads need replacing, what you'll need, and how to fit new brake pads safely.

When Should You Replace Electric Bike Brake Pads?

Brake pads do not last forever. How quickly they wear depends on how often you ride, the terrain, weather conditions and your riding style.

You should inspect your brake pads regularly and replace them if you notice:

  • Reduced braking performance
  • Squealing or grinding noises
  • Longer stopping distances
  • The braking material has worn down to around 1–2mm
  • Uneven wear between the pads

Replacing worn brake pads early helps protect your brake discs and keeps your bike safe to ride.

What you will need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • 1. Replacement brake pads

These are the parts that actually create friction and stop your bike safely.. Always check your bike manufacturer's recommendations to ensure you purchase the correct brake pads.

  • 2. Allen keys or hex keys

These are needed to loosen and tighten the bolts holding the brake components in place.

  • 3. Needle-nose pliers (if required)

These can help remove retaining clips or pins on some brake systems.

  • 4. Flat-head screwdriver or tyre lever

This can be used to gently push the brake pistons back into position.

  • 5. Clean cloth

Use this to wipe away dirt, dust and any old brake residue before fitting new pads.

  • 6. Disc brake cleaner (recommended)

This helps clean the rotor and brake area for better braking performance.

  • 7. Protective gloves

These keep your hands clean and help protect them from sharp edges and brake dust.

STEP 1

Remove the Wheel

Switch your e-bike off before carrying out any maintenance.

Remove the wheel that contains the brake you're replacing. This provides easy access to the brake calliper and pads.

STEP 2

Remove the Old Brake Pads

Locate the retaining pin or clip holding the brake pads in place.

Carefully remove the pin using the appropriate tool, then slide the old brake pads out of the calliper.

Take note of how the pads and spring are positioned, as you'll need to install the new pads in the same orientation.

STEP 3

Reset the Brake Pistons

As the brake pads wear, the pistons move closer together.

Before fitting the new pads, gently push the pistons back into the calliper using a plastic tyre lever or brake piston tool. This creates enough space for the thicker replacement pads.

Avoid using excessive force or sharp metal tools that could damage the pistons.

Step 4

Install the New Brake Pads

Insert the new brake pads and spring into the calliper exactly as the old ones were fitted.

Reinstall the retaining pin or clip and ensure everything is securely in place.

Double-check that the pads sit evenly inside the calliper.

Step 5

Refit the Wheel

Reinstall the wheel and make sure it is correctly seated and securely tightened.

Spin the wheel to ensure the brake disc passes cleanly between the new pads without excessive rubbing.

Step 6

Test the Brakes

Before riding, squeeze the brake lever several times until it feels firm.

This allows the brake pistons to move back into position against the new pads.

Take your bike for a slow test ride in a safe area and check that the brakes are working correctly.

Bedding In New Brake Pads

New brake pads need a short bedding-in period before they perform at their best.

Gradually apply the brakes several times during your first few rides, allowing the pads and rotor to wear together evenly. Avoid heavy braking until the pads have fully bedded in.

Replacing your electric bike's brake pads is a simple maintenance job that can improve braking performance, extend the life of your brake discs and help keep every ride safe.

By checking your brake pads regularly and replacing them before they become excessively worn, you'll enjoy smoother, more reliable braking and greater confidence every time you ride.
