Electric Bike Safety Guide
Ride Smart. Charge Safely. Protect Your Bike.
Electric bikes offer a fast, efficient and enjoyable way to travel. Following these safety guidelines will help you stay in control, protect others around you, and get the best performance from your ride.
SAFETY ESSENTIAL 1
Always wear a helmet
A properly fitted helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injury and should be worn on every ride, regardless of distance or speed.
SAFETY ESSENTIAL 2
Check brakes, tyres and lights before every ride
Ensure your brakes are responsive, tyres are correctly inflated, and lights are functioning to maintain control and visibility at all times.
SAFETY ESSENTIAL 3
Stay visible, especially in low light conditions
Use front and rear lights and wear a headlight / bright or reflective clothing to ensure you can be clearly seen by other road users.
SAFETY ESSENTIAL 4
Keep both hands on the handlebars
Maintaining a firm grip improves balance, control and reaction time, especially when braking or navigating obstacles.
SAFETY ESSENTIAL 5
Follow local road laws and speed limits
Always comply with applicable regulations, including where you can ride and maximum permitted speeds, to ensure safe and legal use.
Before Your First Ride
-
Understand Power & Pedal Assist Modes
Familiarise yourself with how the pedal assist levels and power settings respond. Start on a lower setting to get used to the level of assistance and how quickly the bike accelerates.
-
Test Acceleration & Braking
Ride in a safe, open area away from traffic to understand how the bike accelerates and how responsive the brakes feel. Practising controlled starts and stops will help you ride more smoothly.
-
Adjust Your Riding Position
Set the saddle height and handlebar position so you can ride comfortably with good posture. A proper fit improves balance, control and reduces fatigue on longer rides.
Pre-Ride Safety Check
-
Brake Performance
Test both front and rear brakes to ensure they respond quickly and bring the bike to a smooth, controlled stop without delay.
-
Tyre Condition & Pressure
Check that tyres are properly inflated to the recommended level and free from cuts, cracks or excessive wear that could affect grip or stability.
-
Lights & Reflectors
Confirm that front and rear lights are functioning correctly and that reflectors are clean and visible, especially if riding in low light conditions.
-
Frame & Handlebar Stability
Ensure the frame feels solid and handlebars are secure, with no unusual movement, looseness or rattling while stationary.
-
Drivetrain Condition
Inspect the chain, gears and pedals to make sure they are clean, properly lubricated and moving smoothly without resistance or noise.
-
Battery & Display Check
Make sure the battery is securely fitted and sufficiently charged, and that the display or control panel is functioning correctly before setting off.
Riding Safety
Stay Aware
- Keep your attention on the road
Stay focused at all times and be prepared to react to changing conditions.
- Watch your surroundings
Look out for pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists and potential hazards such as potholes or debris.
- Minimise distractions
Avoid using mobile devices or wearing headphones that may reduce your awareness of traffic and sounds around you.
Control Your Speed
- Start gradually
Accelerate gently, especially if you are new to e-bikes or using a higher assist level.
- Adapt to your environment
Reduce speed in busy, narrow or unfamiliar areas where conditions may change quickly.
- Ride to the conditions
Be cautious on wet, uneven or loose surfaces, as these can affect grip and braking distance.
Positioning on the Road
- Ride predictably
Maintain a consistent line and clearly signal your intentions when turning or changing direction.
- Keep a safe distance
Allow enough space between you and other road users to react safely if needed.
- Use designated cycling infrastructure
Ride in cycle lanes where available and position yourself appropriately within the road when they are not.
Carrying Loads & Passengers
- Do not exceed the recommended weight limit
- Ensure any cargo is securely fastened
- Only carry passengers if your e-bike is designed for it
- Extra weight will affect braking and handling
Maintenance & Care
Regular maintenance keeps your e-bike safe and performing at its best.
- Check brake pads and replace when worn
- Keep tyres inflated to the recommended pressure
- Clean and lubricate moving parts regularly
- Inspect cables and components for wear
- Arrange servicing with a qualified technician when needed
